Rainwater and Greywater Systems

Modular Greywater and Rainwater Systems by New Eco

New Eco's Blue Eco System has gained international attention and was featured in Popular Science magazine (click here to read the article) and is leading the way for greywater and rainwater recycling systems for residential and commercial use.

A greywater system takes waste water generated from processes such as bathing or showering and recycles it for other applications like flushing toilets or irrigation. Greywater can be purified or non-purified, depending on what it is being used for.

How does the system work?

The system collects greywater and rainwater from places like your roof, the shower, bathtub or bathroom sink and filters it, stores it and then redistributes it around your house for things like flushing the toiler or watering your lawn.  The Blue Eco System is not overbuilt and requires minimal maintenance, unlike some of the more expensive systems available on the market.

The Blue Eco System requires only a small amount of electricity to run, uses a UV filter to eliminate contaminants and comes in modular 30 gallon pods that connect to one another, so you can make your system as big or as small as you want.

How much does the system cost?

The classic system starts at $1,499 USD (not including tax and shipping) and includes a 30 gallon storage pod, pump and filter systems and all the parts needed to connect it to your exisiting plumbing.  Each additional 30 gallon storage pod is $249 USD (not including tax and shipping).

You will also need to have your plumbing adjusted for the system and have it installed by a licensed plumber.  Check with your local plumber about pricing for the above items before ordering a system.

Do I need to check my local laws before installing the system?

Yes you do and that is why it's important to make sure the Blue Eco System is legal in your area before ordering or installing a system.  Many areas require special permits or have coding issues that deal specifically with greywater and rainwater recycling.  You must make sure the Blue Eco System is legal in your area. New Eco is not liable or responsible for the installation of any systems or an illegally installed system.

Is it safe? If so then why do I need to check my local laws?

Greywater and rainwater recycling has been around for thousands of years and is extremely safe when done correctly.  Problems only arise when a system is installed improperly, not being used correctly, is not filtering water properly or is damaged or in need of maintenance or repairs.  Many local laws are outdated but are starting to adapt to this new wave of greywater and rainwater recycling and many government agencies are rewriting their greywater and rainwater laws to make the systems acceptable.

Where can I learn more about greywater and rainwater recycling?

There are some great books about greywater and everyone who is interested should start by reading the book Create and Oasis with Greywater by the folks over at Oasis Designs.  Another great place with a ton of information, including links to local laws, is the website Greywater Action
